Here in Middle Tennessee, we don’t often see wintry driving conditions. When we do, however, it can be difficult to drive in. Follow these simple steps to help you weather the storm.
1) Wear your Seat Belt
This doesn’t need any additional explanation, does it?
2) Know how to come out of a slide
If you are sliding, take your foot off the brake and steer toward where you want to go. Keeping your foot on the brake will only keep you sliding in that direction.
3) Keep a safe distance from other cars and drive at a slow, safe, consistent speed
Having an increased distance to bring your vehicle to a stop may be the difference between an auto accident and simply a close call.
4) Understand the limits of 4-wheel drive!
4×4 Trucks or SUV’s are great to help you “go” in the snow, but the 4-wheel drive function does not help you stop! In fact, if you require 4-wheel drive to travel, you should be especially careful to go slow.
5) Have confidence in your insurance coverage
Partner with an insurance agency that can educate you in the entire auto insurance policy, and make sure you are properly covered! Snowy conditions often lead to comprehensive (sliding into a ditch, for example) and collision (sliding into a car, for example) claims.
Bonus Tip: When in Doubt, Stay Home!
If you are uncertain if you can handle the driving conditions, you should consider staying home if possible.
